Freedom of Speech

by
Jaime O. Perez

Mr. Gerardo Rodriguez Jimenez is a remarkable fellow. He had a vision he wanted to share with the community. He worked hard to open doors and share with English speaking El Pasoans, the challenges, hopes and dreams of those that speak Spanish.

To this end, he approached me to create The Border Observer and asked for a partnership to accomplish his goals and also share the perspective of those of us who consider ourselves American of Mexican heritage. He wanted to create a cross-cultural bridge that would engender greater understanding among those with different worldviews.

A year later, the vision has expressed itself boldly.

As happens in life, Gerardo has had to move on because of family and academic obligations but because of his generosity of spirit, he requested of me to continue the project a few weeks longer in order to allow for a full transition to new management at Diario De El Paso. I agreed and now that the transition has been completed, I too depart from leading the print edition with gratitude for the opportunity to demonstrate it is possible to produce an honest product.

I leave with great appreciation for the opportunity afforded me to express the views and opinions of so many El Pasoans that feel disenfranchised and censored by traditional media.

Many readers expressed the opinion the Border Observer was a, “breath of fresh air.” I thank our many readers for their good wishes. Although we announce the end of the print version of the Border Observer, look for news and events on the Internet.

Thank you to Gerardo Rodriguez for the opportunity afforded me to write on these pages. I leave deeply appreciative of Don Osvaldo Rodriguez Borunda, Gerardo, Noe and Adrian Rodriguez for having the strength of character to fight for the rights of Mexicans who live in the US and have no voice and for reaching out to Americans of all stripes who seek a strengthened Democracy.

Enhorabuena.
